We have journeyed from the end of the story of Joseph to the beginning of the story of Moses. Scholars and Jewish descendants believe there is 64 years between the death of Joseph and the birth of Moses. It took 64 years for Joseph to be forgotten. Sixty-four years for God to grow the Israelites to a number that posed a threat to an elite nation. Fear drove the new Pharaoh to draw untrue conclusions about the Israelites, but this was God’s plan. Recall Genesis 15. God told Abraham that his descendants would be slaves in a foreign land for 400 years. Don’t worry too much about the calculation of that 400 years until we get to Exodus 12.
Although Pharoh feared the Israelites, the Israelite midwives feared their God. Pharoh ordered the midwives to kill each baby boy they delivered, yet the midwives didn’t obey those orders. Instead they delivered every child the Lord continued to bless the Israelites with. They stood in front of Pharoh and claimed that the women gave birth too fast. They protected God’s people. They protected God’s plan. They revered God. As a result, God blessed them with children of their own.
How beautiful it is when we submit to God’s plan. How wonderful it is when we stand in alignment with God’s purposes. What would it look like for us to be in agreement with God rather than policies or culture? What would it look like if we chose to love people when culture justifies us to “cancel” people? How could God get the glory if we devoted ourselves to reading and practicing God’s Word? How different would our children be if we raised them to focus their minds on things that are pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4)?
Take a moment of silence and ask the Lord how He wants YOU to live differently for Him.
