Exodus 12:29-13:16

““This is what you must do when the Lord fulfills the promise he swore to you and to your ancestors. When he gives you the land where the Canaanites now live,”

Alas, the Israelites are leaving Egypt. We have just witnessed God fulfilling another series of promises. In chapter 4 verse 23, God told Moses that He would kill Pharaoh's firstborn son and God has done so. In chapter 3 verse 22, God says they will plunder the Egyptians on the way out, and they have done so. God told Abraham that his descendants will be oppressed for 400 years in Genesis 15:13, and they were! (Jewish scholars believe the calculation of this began with Isaac, but you can read more of this in the resource below) This isn’t the last time we will see God do this. God will continue to tell His people what He will and it will happen. Prophecies were told to various people and they are often fulfilled and recorded by completely different people, sometimes hundreds of years later.
A major prophecy that transcends throughout scripture is the coming of a savior, Jesus. The moment sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, God made it clear there would be a savior who would defeat satan. (Genesis 3:15) Yesterday we discussed how the lamb slain during the Passover was symbolic of Jesus coming to die and save us like God saved the firstborn sons from being killed by the angel of death. Hundreds of years later, we see the fulfillment of this prophecy recorded in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each of these authors can be traced back to with certainty.
In Exodus 13:5;11, God repeats the promise of bringing them into a land flowing with milk and honey, a promise given to Abraham in the book of Genesis and will be fulfilled in the book of Joshua. Let’s keep in mind as we read, that God is using these imperfect people to carry out this plan. We will see them mess up many times, yet God is faithful to HIS promises.
Faithfulness is a characteristic of God. The Apostle Paul classifies faithfulness as a fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22) Paul also writes, “…if we are faithless, he [God] remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)
These plans were not fulfilled because mankind played its role perfectly. They came to fruition because God made sure they did, so that His Words would not fail, in spite of His rebellious children. We are faithless. He is faithful.

Reflection Questions
- If God can keep promises a thousand years old, do you believe He can keep the promises He’s told you?
- In what ways have you been unfaithful to God?
- Has God provided you with enough evidence that His word can be trusted? Why or why not?
